The real name of the noble Imam Ash-Shafi'i is Muhammad bin Idris bin al-Abbas bin Uthman bin Shafi' bin as-Saaib bin Ubaid bin Abdi Yazid bin Hasyim bin al-Muththolib bin Abdi Manaf al-Muththolibi al-Qurashi.

Has the chew of Abu Abdillah, but is better known as Imam ash-Shafi'i, which is taken from the name of his grandfather, rather than the name of his chew. In contrast to Imam Abu Hanifah who is better known by his chewing name than his real name, namely; an-Nu'man bin Thabit.

Imam ash-Shafi'i's father -Idris bin al-Abbas- used to live in the city of Medina until then for some reason, he decided and his family to move to the Asqolan area; a city to the southwest of the Palestinian city, close to the Gaza area. But it is very unfortunate that destiny said otherwise, he died not long after the birth of the little Imam as-Syaf'i

The sixth grandfather of Imam ash-Shafi'i from his father's path named Abdi Yazid bin Hasyimbin al-Muththolibi was one of the companions of the Prophet. Even though he was old at that time, he met and believed in the Prophet Muhammad. His wife, Ash-Syifa bint Hasyim bin Abdi Manaf, is the sister of Abdul Mutholib bin Hasyim; Prophet Muhammad's grandfather

Overall there are four grandfathers of Imam ash-Shafi'i who belong to the generation of companions of the Prophet Muhammad. They are; Shafi', as-Saaib, Ubaid, and Abdi Yazid. And it may be because Shafi's grandfather, who was a friend of the Prophet Muhammad, Imam Muhammad bin Idris is better known by the name ash-Shafi'i.
