Metabolism refers to all the chemical processes that occur in the body to sustain life. Consists of two main components:

a. Catabolism: The process of catabolism involves the breakdown of complex substances, such as carbohydrates, proteins, and fats, into simpler forms, producing energy. Catabolism also produces by-products such as carbon dioxide and water.

b. Anabolism: The process of anabolism involves the formation of complex substances, such as proteins and nucleic acids, from simpler molecules. Anabolism requires the energy produced during catabolism.
