Meaning of Riba

1. Language

In language, the word usury means ziyadah, which is additional. It is said in Arabic saying:

Something experiences usury, meaning it experiences an increase.

Sometimes the word usury is also mentioned with a different lafadz, such as rama', as Umar bin Al-Khattab said:

I fear from you is rama' (meaning is usury)

Sometimes the term rubbiyah is also used, as the Prophet Muhammad said

There is no longer any demand for usury or blood.

2. Term
