1. Language

Ibnu Manzhur (d. 711) in Lisan al-Arab explains that the word walimah is a fraction of the word Al-Walam which is often interpreted as gathering, but it is also often interpreted as food that is presented because there is a wedding or something else.

2. Term

In general, our fiqh scholars provide a definition that walimah is:

"Walimah is the name for every food because of a pleasant incident, either because of a marriage or otherwise, but the expression walimah is absolutely only for marriage while other things must be tied with the next word".

This term is finally more specific to marriage because in general the walimah is held after the husband and wife gather through a valid marriage contract, and because generally at that time all relatives, family, friends gather to pray and have a meal.

So the essence of walimah is actually a banquet, and any food that is available because of a marriage, then it is called walimah, even though it may only be limited to hot cakes and tea, especially if it is added with boxed rice to take home, then of course Thus it is legally called walimah.
