[What is a crane/derrick operator]



Approximately 20,000 people take the exam each year to qualify for operating cranes and derricks.



Crane and derrick operators are qualified to operate overhead cranes, bridge cranes, jib cranes, guide derricks, stiff leg derricks, gin poles, and other cranes and derricks with a lifting capacity of 5 tons or more.



There are three types of crane/derrick operator qualifications.



・"Crane/derrick operator (no restrictions)": Can operate all cranes and derricks.

・"Crane derrick operator [crane only]: can only operate cranes.

・"Crane/derrick operator [floor-operated crane only]": Only floor-operated cranes can be operated.



All operating type cranes under 5 tons can be operated with any of the above three qualifications.

The test subjects include written and practical skills.



There are two main ways to obtain a crane derrick operator license.



1. A method of completing practical training at a crane training school (a training institution registered by the director of the Labor Bureau), and then taking a written examination at the Safety and Health Technical Examination Center (designated examination institution).



2. A method of passing a written test (not a practical test) at the Safety and Health Technical Testing Center (designated testing institution), and then completing practical training at a crane training school (a training institution registered by the director of the Labor Bureau). In this case, since you will enter a crane training school after passing the written test at the Safety and Health Technical Examination Center, the training time will be shorter than the general course, and the training fee will be reduced by 20,000 to 40,000 yen.



Crane derrick operator examinations are conducted monthly at the Health and Safety Technology Testing Centers (7 locations nationwide), branch offices of the Japan Safety and Health Technology Testing Association.
